The Young Fogey on a Country the Western Confucian Never Visited
Much to my regret, given my background in Latin American studies and Asia — Spanish in the Philippines. "The historian Arnold Toynbee, quoted by General MacArthur, called the islands a Latin-American country in Asia."

It is a shame that you never visited the Philippines. The culture is amazing. I've only experienced it second hand myself (my wife is half Chinese-Filipina and half Chammora)but it is one three countries that I hope to visit before I shuffle off the mortal coil (the others being England and Bavaria). The Latino-Malay-Chinese-American cultural fusion is amazing. Makes the country unlike any other in the world.

Not to rub it in or anything, Mr. Sartorius, but I hosted another guest a couple of weeks ago, fed her only Filipino food for four days, took her to the famous tiangge (flea markets) of Greenhills, and showed her around Binondo (Chinatown) and Intramuros. She had a FABULOUS time.
