Amish Resistance

Above, "the booking photos of eight Amish men ordered jailed by a Kentucky judge after they refused to pay fines for not putting orange safety triangles on their horse-drawn buggies because their religion bans bright colors — The Swartzentruber Eight. Abby Zimet reports that "the men had to arrange for neighbors to milk their cows and harvest their tobacco, but said they would continue to 'stand up for what we believe.'"

Amazing. What a clear example of putting the law above the spirit of the law.

The law falls under the fifth commandment, as do all traffic safety regulations.

Such laws at this are a correct prudential understanding because it removes an extreme danger on the road. Further, if a cow falls in a well a farmer doesn't wait to save it, but yet these men very clearly put people's lives at risk by putting the law above the spirit of the law.

I agree; all the Swartzentruber Amish will do is hang a small red lantern from the side of the buggy, which you can hardly see at night. Pretty suicidal, especially in hilly areas...
Mostly they endanger themselves and their families; I have never heard of a fatality to a driver who struck a buggy (and it is a frequent occurance around my part of Ohio), but it is very uncharitable to others, who carry a lifetime of guilt and regret after such an accident.
