The Sexual Revolution's Victims

MercatorNet's Paul Adams reviews a book that "deploy[s] a mass of empirical findings from the social sciences as well anecdotal and confessional testimony to examine the dark side of the sexual revolution" — Adam and Eve after the Pill.

"If it was so liberating, she asks, why are its supposed beneficiaries, especially women, unhappier than before? Why did the very effects that Pope Paul VI predicted in his much despised but (in her eyes, prophetic) 1968 encyclical, Humanae Vitae, come to pass—an increase in infidelity and divorce, the objectification and degradation of women, abandonment of women and children, cohabitation, sexual promiscuity and increased abortion rates?"

This article and the premises it pushes just don't add up!

The anti-contraception fanatics vehemently insist that artificial contraception is completely unnecessary because natural family planning allows for even better fertility management than contraceptives, and yet here they argue that it was artificial contraceptives that caused all these social ills by allowing fertility management!

First year statistics students learn that correlation doesn't prove causation; even a perfunctory look at things should suffice to suggest a number of other trends also terminated the family, such as LBJ's war on poverty and welfare, which began to subsidize (i.e. reward and encourage) illegitimacy, the extension of the right to vote to people such as poor single mothers that US society had previously seen as failures, the increase in service jobs (where women have a better chance at a well-paying jobs) and the laws banning wage discrimination against women, which increased women's pay, household appliances like the microwave which allow women more time out of the home, Medicaid for poor children rather than private charity (which was combined with upturned noses).....

They also neglect to mention that one of Western Civilization's most effective birth suppression and eugenics methods, war, as in the 30 years war, Napoleon's devastation of Europe, the Mongol Invasion, the Russian Revolution, the World Wars, was no longer realistically feasible after the a-bomb was brought into service. The crazy apes outsmarted themselves.

One may disagree and even smile at their arguments, but if nothing else one should admire the dedication of these fanatics.
