$1,000,000,000,000

"The national-security state’s real budget is almost twice what you’ve been told," reports The American Conservative amid the "flurry of headlines about cuts (often called 'threats') to the U.S. defense budget" — $1 Trillion for Defense.

If we actually knew what the government spent, and what it spent it on, then there would be a lot more outrage in our political system.

The sad, sad thing is that most people won't really pay attention to this -- even though we don't have the money to spend on the military we have, that we don't have the money to spend on the bloated welfare state we have, that we don't have the money to spend on the sclerotic kleptocracy that runs our federal & state governments. But nobody will really pay attention, until of course the out of whack spending comes in and destabilizes our system.

Ron Paul may have the demeanor of a crazy uncle who lives in the attic, but he gets a great deal of credit for being one of the few politicians who actually will stand up and tell the truth about the spending situation across the government. Not just the welfare problem, but also the bureaucracy problem and the military spending problem.
