Get the State Out Of the Bedroom!
In other words, Forbes' Elisabeth Eaves' words three years ago — Abolish The Marriage License!
That seems the only reasonable response to these stories — Obama endorses gay marriage, says same-sex couples should have right to wed and N.C. approves constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.
Rightly observes Ms. Eaves, "There seems to be an irony here on both sides: Hands-off-our-religion conservatives and stick-it-to-the-man liberals are both obsessed with having the state's OK."

There's no way to get the State out of the marriage business. It is just a libertarian fantasy, which like like all libertarian fantasies has every virtue except one: a grasp of reality.
Let's assume that the State did abolish marriage. How would people formalize their relationships with their significant other(s)? Why, the libertarian fanatic answers, through a private contract, of course! Perfect! But then how is that contract enforced? Ah, through the mechanisms of the courts. Hmmm. Who runs the courts? The State. Wait, what?
The State's involvement is inevitable. The only question is what the State is going to do.
