Richard Rodriguez on the True Faith

Marvelous how the Catholic, gay, Mexican-American (why not Chicano?) Richard Rodriguez gently out-maneuvers Bill Moyers' smug, liberal, protestant anti-papism. "Here comes everybody," said James Joyce of the Catholic Church in Finnegans Wake.

What an insightful and deep reflection by Rodriguez. I've long been impressed with him as a thinker and as a writer. A great example of the kind of catholicity of spirit that makes Catholicm (with a large "C") come alive. A perfect Catholic? No, but none of us are. God in his grace builds with the crooked timbers of humanity, flaws and all. That Rodriguez is willing to stay in the Church, and to identify with the Church, and clearly love the Church, is a testament both to God's grace and to Rodgriguez's own strength of spirit.

And I am positive that now Pope-Emeritus Benedict XVI would agree with Rodriguez that he (Benedict that is) is a sinner too...
