Hard Left and Old Right Agree

I was pretty sure that we'd agree about this one. The battle for America's soul has always been between fear and freedom. Whose fear and whose freedom changes, but those are just details. I would like to believe that the true definition of American patriotism is to support freedom in all its various guises and confront fear so as to avoid reacting to its shadowy specter but instead to its true source (which is generally something much more managable.)

Hope you and yours are well.

ey Ray! Great to hear from you! I read on your profile that you still live where I lived but that you worked where I worked, in the past tense.

I'm dying to know what's going on with you. Things are good here. Drop me a line at jaselc at rit dot edu.

Oh yeah, and you're dead right about freedom and fear. I try to remind my liberal colleagues that the current fear-mongering about country white folks is pretty similar to the fear-mongering about city black folks we had back in the '80s and '90s. Both are designed to give more power for the Almighty State.
