Miguel de Unamuno

Stefany Anne Golberg on the author whose San Manuel Bueno, Mártir, a "novella [that] centres on a heroic priest who has lost his faith in immortality, yet says nothing of his doubts to his parishioners, not wanting to disturb their faith," was the first novel I attempted to read in Spanish — The Philosophy of Death. "He saw tragedy and death in life, and that was why he loved it."

I read his "Tragic Sense of Life" a few months ago, after having it sit on my bookshelf for over a decade. One of the more powerful books I've ever picked up.
