Benito Cuomo's Statism of Emergency

Our governor's reaction to it being a tad chilly and breezy today — NY declares state of emergency due to 'Polar vortex' winter storm. I got a day off of work, the missus and kiddoes a day off of school, and the state's economy lost how many billions I do not know. Thus spake H. L. Mencken, who nailed it a century ago:
Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary.
