Scarlet Letter, Great Gatsby, Invisible Man, Moby-​Dick, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

All contenders for title of Great American Novel, according to Michael Dirda — The Big Read: Can a Single Book Sum Up a Nation?

I was leaning towards agreeing with the author and choosing the penultimate title on my list, but think I would choose the last one. That said, the author is right to rhetorically ask, "Is there a better book about the DNA of these United States than Alexis de Tocqueville’s Democracy in America?"
