A Californian Vietnamese Catholic Home Altar

From this story — Incredibly kindness of San Jose police officer who has raised almost $100,000 for the family of a man killed in road rage shooting. I like it, and need to upgrade mine. Quite similar to the Vietnamese Buddhist home altars I remember from my refugee resettlement days. Inculturation, anyone?

In my very limited experience, the Vietnamese who are Catholic have truly made the faith a part of their culture. The Novus Ordo parish we worship at has a Vietnamese congregation that meets at 12:30 for Mass, and the people's devotion and reverence is striking to behold across generations. I am not surprised at the beauty and, for lack of a better term, "Vietnameseness" of the home altar you display here. It is an expression of a deep, Catholic and Vietnamese faith.

St. Therese of the Little Flower, pray for the Catholics of Vietnam, and those Catholics in the Vietnamese diaspora.
