Death and the Civil War; The Fairer Sex and the Birth of Civil Society

Yankee or not, a much-deserved local honor — Memorial Recognizes Civil War Nurses. "These four figures represent the women from Tompkins County who dared convention, following their conscience and their own sense of patriotic and religious duty at a time of national need and went to hospital and battlefields to nurse the wounded, the dying, the sick with disease."

This story brings to mind this incredibly moving and informative documentary, which shows, among other things, how womenfolk, both Northern and Southron, motivated by something higher than mere wage-slavery, helped not only maintain but advance civilization in the face of modernity:
