The Burned-Over District is a term used by some to describe the region of Western New York in the historical period of 1800-1850. It is also sometimes called the Second Great Awakening with a combination of religious, social and political elements.

Yankee or not, a much-deserved local honor — Memorial Recognizes Civil War Nurses. "These four figures represent the women from Tompkins County who dared convention, following their conscience and their own sense of patriotic and religious duty at a time of national need and went to hospital and battlefields to nurse the wounded, the dying, the sick with disease."
