The Fête nationale, a.k.a. Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, or rather its eve, was celebrated on our first night. Our second night took us to the Stade Canac, a delightfully dilapidated ballpark that serves poutine and French wine, to watch the Dominican Republic vs Québec Capitales, a team of the Canadian American Association of Professional Baseball. The Hôtel du Nord, an affordable place that made our stay even more affordable with its kitchenette, was our home for the first two nights, and the stunning Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier, thirty minutes north of the city, for the rest of the week. Samuel de Champlain was my travel companion in the form of Champlain's Dream by David Hackett Fischer of Albion's Seed fame. Happy Fête du Canada on her sesquicentennial.
